The Verizon IndyCar Series visited the pristine grounds of Barber Motorsports Park on Monday to test new aero kits from Chevrolet and Honda. The Promoter Test, scheduled for March 16-17, is the first time that all teams have been able to test the revised bodywork together.
Combined results for the two sessions have Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganssi Racing with the fastest overall time (1:07.4805, 122.702 mph), marginally faster than second place Simon Pagenaud (1:07.5329, 122.607 mph) and third place Will Power (1:07.5495, 122.577 mpg). The top five all use Chevrolet engines and bodywork; the fastest Honda was Ryan Hunter-Reay in sixth (1:07.8494, 122.035 mph). The top 19 drivers were all within one second of Dixon’s fast lap.
“It’s really a new era,” said Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud of the testing so far.
Teams are hard at work making adjustments to the aero kit packages to extract maximum performance from their cars.
“I think both cars (Chevrolet and Honda) are very different, which for the fans and series will be exciting. Honestly, I don’t care what it looks like as long as it’s fast,” said Dixon, driver of the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet. “It’s been a significant change in drivability or how to attack the car with all the downforce. We’re working with balance issues, weight distributions and just trying to feel out some of the changes with the aero kit and the loads changing significantly with the corner speeds. All in all, a decent day. We still have plenty to test tomorrow and try to find some extra things for when we come back for the race in April.”
