New ‘Power Pack’ system will turn reasonably priced RWD wonder into a track fiend
Tuning house Cosworth - yep, that Cosworth - has announced plans to boost the power of the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ (and Scion FRS across the pond) from its stock 200bhp to a deranged 380bhp.
It's part of a plan to change the way the company does tuning,
ditching the focus from individual components to a complete package of
upgrades.The first of these is for the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine in the GT86/BRZ. The first stage is called, unsurprisingly, Stage 1, capable of boosting power to 230bhp.
You get a new free-flow exhaust system with an ‘overpipe' front pipe and 4-2-1 exhaust manifold with thermal coating (to reduce under-bonnet temperatures), ECU tweaks, a Cosworth performance filtration system and low temp thermostat, and even an exclusive Cossie badge and numbered plaque. Essentially, a big exhaust and a remap.
Later, Cosworth will announce further Stages, taking power to 325bhp, and eventually 380bhp for a ‘race-track' configuration. That's 380bhp from a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe. That's... a lot.
"We are delivering a series of power upgrade solutions that will allow drivers to unlock the real performance potential of their vehicles," Hal Reisiger, Cosworth chief exec said.
