BRIATORE IN MORE TROUBLE

THE DISGRACED FORMER FORMULA 1 TEAM BOSS HAS BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF TAX EVASION

Tax evasion is a bit of a national sport in Italy and so when
someone is found guilty of it, it is always worth wondering
why it has happened, when it is such a commonplace
occurence. Whatever the story, the Tribunale di
Genova has ruled that Flavio Briatore was guilty of tax evasion
in relation to his yacht Force Blue. Briatore has been
sentenced to one year and 11 months of probation.
Briatore, 65, and fellow directors of his company were
found to have used the boat for recreational purposes whilst
claiming tax benefits for charters, including fuel and mooring
exemptions through the issuing of false invoices. Briatore's
lawyers said that he would appeal.

Briatore was thrown out of Formula 1 in 2009 after the
Renault team, which he was running at the time, admitted
to having fixed the Singapore Grand Prix the previous
year by having Nelson Piquet Jr crash deliberately to give
Fernando Alonso the opportunity to use a Safety Car to
gain track position that resulted in him being able to win.

Initially Briatore was banned from the sport for life but sloppy
legal work by the FIA resulted in the Italian being able to reduce the ban, although he has not
been around much since then. He has spent his time developing the Billionaire clothing brand and
opening Cipriani-branded restaurants.
