Mercedes-Benz Concept A

The Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class made its public debut today at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show and will make its North American debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show tomorrow. We now have some interesting news about the next-generation A-Class hatchback courtesy of Top Gear.

According to Mercedes-Benz senior designer Mark Fetherston, the next-generation A-Class hatch will carry about 85 percent of the Concept A’s styling. That means it will just as aggressive as the concept you see here, but will be toned down just a notch to meet safety standards.

What’s more exciting is the confirmation of Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG. According to the report, Mercedes-Benz is working on 350-hp version of the baby hatch. No other details were released but stay tuned and we’ll try to dig up more tomorrow at the 2011 New York Auto Show.

Refresher: Power for the Mercedes-Benz Concept A comes from a transversely mounted 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged, direct-injected engine that produces 210-hp with a maximum torque of 229 lb-ft. The engine in the Concept A is mated to a dual-clutch transmission, although Mercedes-Benz won’t say how many gears we have to shift with here.
